Het Maagdenhuis in Antwerpen bezit een uniek muzikaal monument. Achter de Faustina beeldengroep op de binnenkoer staat namelijk een sonnet afgebeeld met een muzieknotatie, wat zeer ongebruikelijk is.

The Maagdenhuis in Antwerp has a unique musical monument. In the courtyard, behind the Faustina statue, we find a sonnet pictured with musical notations, which is rather unusual.

Dit sonnet was de aanzet voor een zoektocht naar de muziek die geklonken kon hebben binnen de muren van het voormalige meisjesweeshuis.  In het boek Maegdelycke klanken kan je lezen wat er allemaal ontdekt is.  De bijhorende CD zorgt ervoor dat u niet enkel over de muziek leest, maar deze eveneens kan beleven. 

This sonnet was the starting point of a quest to discover the music that may have sounded within the walls of the former orphanage for girls.  You can read about the discoveries in the book Maegdelycke klanken (Maidenly sounds).   The accompanying CD ensures you’re not only reading about the music, but you can also experience it. 

Ook andere weeshuizen in Europa worden muzikaal onder de loep genomen. Vooreerst het RC Maagdenhuis Amsterdam waar zingen een belangrijk onderdeel van het leven was. Verder ook het Ospedale della Pietà in Venetië waar Antonio Vivaldi er mee voor zorgde dat toeristen speciaal voor zijn muzikanten een halt maakten tijdens hun “Grand Tour”. Tenslotte het Foundling Hospital in Londen waar GF Handel niet enkel geld hielp inzamelen met benefietconcerten, maar dat toonaangevend zou worden voor de ontwikkeling van de Britse culturele scene.

Other orphanages in Europe are also musically examined. First of all, the RC Maagdenhuis Amsterdam, where singing was an important part of everyday life. In Venice, there was the Ospedale della Pietà where Antonio Vivaldi made sure that tourists would make a stop during their “Grand Tour” especially for his musicians. And finally the Foundling Hospital in London, where GF Handel helped raise funds with charity concerts, but which would also be important in the development of the British cultural scene .
