During her stay in Cambridge, Patricia PE Janssen joined The Cantus Singers of Cambridge and chamber choir Cantores.  There were regular discussions about the benefits (if any) of singing from early notation.  To clarify its value, she founded Mensurabilis.  Eight singers worked on, and performed in September 2005, madrigals from the Musica Transalpina manuscript, singing from the mensural notation.

Back in Belgium Patricia continued Mensurabilis with a smaller, Belgian cast. The group focuses on Medieval and early Renaissance music.  With chant, recorder and harp they revive sounds from a distant past.  Wherever possible, the ladies start from the original sources.

Mensurabilis refers to the 13th century treaty Ars cantus mensurabilis from Franco of Cologne.  Instead of the usual theoretical approach, he collated a practical guide for musicians.  His most important contribution was the innovative change in the notation of rhythm, which ensured it was no longer bound by its context.
